Founded in 1639. A private university with approximately 380 years of history, founded on the spirit of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. It aims to cultivate individuals who seek truth, live truthfully, and reveal truth. With three campuses in Fukakusa and Omiya, Kyoto, and Seta, Shiga, approximately 20,000 students study across 10 faculties and 11 graduate schools. The Omiya Campus houses buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan and holds numerous valuable historical materials, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. International students come to study each year from approximately 274 partner institutions in about 68 countries worldwide (as of November 2025). At the international student dormitories, Japanese students provide support for the daily lives of international students.
